Hello Protocab and fellow members. I'm having problems adopting. Some background first.

So far I've only done one conversion of a loco to Protocab, even though I bought more than one set-up of the pilot series way back in autumn 2015, so bear in mind that this equipment is that old without having had much done with it, although about a year ago I've found another loco to convert so I took the body off and connected up the battery, charger, and LCU and charged the battery and then tried to adopt the LCU but during the process I discovered the B button coming up red and I then realised that I had asked Protocab to adopt this LCU to button B (there was a note to say so aswell). I must have messed up somewhere because I could not get it to work. I would switch on the 0201, then press the locoswitch of this LCU set up and button B would shine but I could not get it to work. Can't recall what happened when I pressed button B, whether it turned green but it would not work.

I unsoldered the connections to the motor to make sure the motor did work and it did, then soldered them back on and figured I had somehow messed up the adoption so I thought I'd try to unadopt it, but by that time the red light was not coming on at all, and you need that to come on in order to unadopt it …BUT … this is the funny thing, when I press and hold the mode button to go into management mode, button B (along with A) then shows up steady, as it would if it was adopted. I tried to adopt it again but without success.

That's the background - I left the set up then for perhaps a year and I've now decided to try again. The battery had been connected up all that time, I know I should have unplugged it, so I tried charging it and it took many many hours before eventually the light turned green. So I started to go through the adopting stages as in the little booklet supplied. Stage 3 - I unplugged the battery and when plugging it back in got the 1 long - 2 short flashes from the blitz light. So that was stage 3. The next stages have to be completed within five minutes so I started with stage 4, touch and hold the locoswitch for a second or so until you see the blitz light. Well, as soon as my finger got close to locoswitch the blitz light flashed and that was it, nothing else. I held my finger on it and the blitz light just flashes once, like it does when it's adopted and switched on, no 4 short flashes and 1 long flash. I think that means it's not searching. So I can't get passed stage 4.

Button B does not come on when I tap locoswitch, but it will still come on steady when I go into management mode. Puzzling

Hello Richard, I'm sorry for the delay coming back to you. What you are describing appears to be an 'orphan' LCU, where the 0201 Direct Controller believes that it is still adopted to button B. It sounds that the 0502 LCU also believes it is adopted, but the adoption link has become broken. This is easily fixed.
There are two options: you can send the 0201 Direct Controller and the 0502 LCU (not the battery) back to us and we'll fix it for you or you can fix it yourself. In this case, you'll need your computer and have the 9801 Management App running. You can then unallocate button B following the user guide.
To unadopt the 0502, use the 'paper clip' method shown in the 0201 User guide. You can then adopt the 0502 to your chosen button on the 0201. The 0502 that you have on button B predates the 'one-button' adoption method, so you may prefer to send the two units to us to update the firmware on both units at the same time. We don't charge for that service because our aim is for our Owners to be up and running as quickly as possible!
Best regards

Excellent, thanks Tony. Being as I'll need to send you an LCU anyway in order to get one of those small batteries I may aswell send my 0201 and this 0502 and have you sort it out for me. Will that mess up the adoption I have on button A? If it does I reckon I can readopt it … except … do you really have to unplug the battery before adopting or is that just for doing it first time to check things? That will mean having to take the loco apart.

No, not at all, Rich... button A retains its setting irrespective of what you do with the other buttons, until, of course, you decide to do something else with it! So, just leave the Ixion Fowler on the buffer stops while the controller and the other LCU is 'in works' and when you get them back, a day or so later, depending on the post, you've have two working LCUs and a new 1902-902030 battery!

Tony, I haven't been down town to the post office all week, I'll send you my 0201 and 0502 shortly, but in the meantime I had another LCU and I managed to adopt that one. Everything went fine as per the instructions but when I got to tapping in the 0201 passcode it got tricky. When tapping in anything higher than two the blitz light kept coming on before I'd finished (yes I did have the locoswitch secured), but it's easy enough to start again so I just kept at it and eventually got it but not sure how I achieved it. What's the knack, I tried it slowly, I tried it fast, or is it just a case of experimenting as the switch reacts differently to different fingers?

Hello Rich.. since 2016, the original method of tapping the four digit passcode has been superseded by a one button press that is a lot simpler. However, the LCUs you have predate that, so my recommendation is to send the 0201 and both LCUs back when you get to the Post Office and we will update them to the latest version and adopt them to your 0201...

Well, I sent my equipment to Protocab on a Thursday a few weeks back and got it back the next Tuesday morning. Excellent service, they must have worked on it over the weekend, they even replaced an LCU that they discovered was faulty that I'd had since 2015, no charge. Haven't got around to using any of the equipment yet because a lot of work required on locos first, not in order to install Protocab equipment, in order to meet my modelling requirements, like replacing 3 pole motor with 5 pole and making room for flywheel.

Tony, good afternoon, I have inadvertently un-adopted a LCU from my 0201, I am having trouble with the 4 digit code adoption. Please let me know where I can find the information to see if my LCU can be adopted with the one button process. I believe I have updated all my Locos to the new firmware in the past. ATB Chris

Hello Chris, apologies for the delay in getting back to you as I've just seen the note. Is it possible to send me an email please to the usual email address with the serial number of the LCU (it is on the front of the LCU) then we can see if you are up to date with the firmware or not, and then be able to give you advice on the adoption process?
Thanks for mentioning us on the Gauge O Guild forum - it will be interesting to see how many people come to the stand this weekend at Warley. By the way I've heard from another Owner today that he has successfully installed Protocab in the Helljan GWR 43XX Mogul. We are at Warley this weekend - I'll be back in touch with you next week.
Best regards, Tony

p.s. can I just confirm please, it is unadopted from the controller, but the controller still thinks it is adopted? If that is the case, then 2 options, 1. Use the 9801 Management App for Windows and connect the 0201 Direct Controller to your laptop through than application and the 9956 Cable, and clear out the button, or 2. which is an easier option but not as elegant is to use a spare button on the 0201 and adopt the LCU to that. Since you are on the latest version of the firmware then it is a one-button adoption process. Have you got the latest 0201 User Guide version 6.0 or later? You can download this from the support website https://updates.protocab.com/ , or I can send you a copy. This gives details of the updated one touch adoption process.
