I would like to know if, for futur developments of Protocab, it woud be possible to use infra-red detection for signals.
My idea is to put an infra-red light for each signal. The infra red light can bright at different frequency.
If you use a frequency for the red light of the signal and another frequency for the green one, the loco can "read" this signal with an infra-red sensor. The LCU can give the signal to stop to the motor (for the red light of signal) or/and give the information to the e-phone for command.
If you want an automatic system the infra red captor give the signal to stop directly to the LCU. Then the LCU give order to the motor to decrease power and stop.
If you want to pilot directly your loco, the infra red sensor give the information of red light to the LCU. Then the LCU give the information to your smarthphone screen with a red signal and you must stop the train manualy with the smarthphone.
An idea for futur?

Hello Kit... apologies for not getting back to you earlier! It's an interesting idea you have there and we should consider it. In essence, any 'transducer' (some means to generate a signal), whether it be from an infra red source or something else, the way we have designed the Protocab system is to enable the LCU or equivalent device to use the data in a meaningful way. I like the idea!

I think that your LCU is able to do a lot of things with a smartphone. If you are able to read messages from a signal, I think you can do what you want, better than a DCC central like Roco Z21 for example, cheaper, easier, more realistic with automatic drive mode (you pilot the loco by the signal and you pilot the signals with à PC) or a direct pilot system (you pilot directly the loco with the smartphone and the smartphone give you the color of the signal on the screen). Of course there is a lot of other solutions than infrared lights but I think that it will be easy to put the infrared lights in the tracks 30 cms before the signals and the sensor in the frame of the loco. With this kind of layout, the infra red light go from the ground to the sky so you have no problem of interference rather an infrared with an horizontal disposition.

I hope you will be able to introduce the smartphone pilot soon.

À l'époque, nous étions intéressés par les réactions des modélisateurs et plus de 50% d'entre eux détestaient utiliser un smartphone et souhaitaient un bouton de commande physique! Le résultat a été le contrôleur direct 0201. La principale objection au smartphone était la nécessité de regarder le téléphone pour connaître la position du contrôle, où un bouton de contrôle a une sensation tactile positive. Le contrôleur tactile 0241 vise à combiner le meilleur des deux mondes, un bouton de commande ou un curseur pour le réglage de la vitesse et un écran tactile pour sélectionner les locomotives, allumer diverses choses et obtenir un retour visuel pratique, par exemple. vitesse, capacité de la batterie et de nombreuses autres informations qui ne sont pas disponibles sur le 0201. In fact, Kit, we first introduced Acc + Ess Protocab on an Android smartphone in 2011!
At the time, we were interested in modellers' reactions and more than 50% of them detested using a smartphone and wanted a physical control button!
The result was the 0201 Direct Controller. The main objection to the smartphone was the need to look at the phone to know the position of the control, where a control knob has a positive tactile feel. The 0241 Touch Controller is about combining the best of both worlds, a control knob or slider for speed control, and a touch screen to select locomotives, turn on various things, and get hands-on visual feedback, for example. speed, battery capacity and many other pieces of information that are not available on the 0201.
We can reintroduce the smartphone in due course, because we are aware that since 2011, many more modellers are comfortable with their use.

Thanks for your answer.
Nicolas explain me that it was the first way that you use before the 0201. And, I must say that, for my case, I prefer a control button rather than a smarthphone. I think that smartphone is not very "practical". But, of cours it will give us more informations about the different locos with the screen.
I hope you will be able to reach your goal for the new 0241. I think it's really a good solution with a button AND a screen for informations and management.
